The Gospel of John is profound and full of truth about the divinity and mission. The first twelve chapters of the book cover a 3-year period. Throughout these chapters, there are conversations, interactions, and things that Jesus does that sow seeds for people that later come to Christ.
This book is built around seven miracles that highlight Jesus is the Savior of the world.
In the book of John one can find the greatest teachings on how to follow Christ. The Lord invites us to “Come and follow Him.”
Two Theological Truths to Give my Life Meaning
1. Jesus is the Creator, He created me on purpose and for purpose in His image
The Gospel of Matthew starts with the genealogy of Jesus because he is writing to a Jewish audience to show them that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. John does not start in Bethlehem; he goes to the very beginning.
John 1 sounds much like Genesis 1. “In the beginning was the Word,” it is a truth claim, Jesus is the Creator. What did this statement mean to the original audience?
When this gospel was written, it would have been more Greek than Jew. John, understanding the culture, is led by the Spirit of God to use a word that the Greeks would have understood. The word is “logos.”
The “logos” or “Word” means the one who holds everything together is Jesus.
The first verse of the gospel of John, “In the beginning” would have reminded the Jews of the book of Genesis. Jesus claims that He is the creative agent in this world.
Colossians 1:17 says, “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
We can find life and meaning in Him. Human beings were made in such a way that they will never make sense apart from Jesus. However, people usually look to something other than God to be satisfied.
John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
The author of this gospel is trying to help us understand that Jesus is not a prophet, or a teacher, or some good man. He is God in the flesh. Remember, the tomb is empty, and the throne is occupied!
2. Jesus is the Savior, He created me to bring glory to Him
Our mission is to glorify Him. The glory of God is evidence that God is at work.
How does God get glory?
– Through Jesus Christ
– Through creation
– Through the Christian
– Through His Church
