Reading the Bible can feel intimidating to many people. Its depth, complexity, and application to daily life may seem overwhelming.
The Bible contains 66 books, each with unique stories. However, they all come together to form one overarching narrative—God’s Big Story.
Why Should You Read the Bible?
First and foremost, Jesus deeply valued the Scriptures.
In fact, approximately 10% of what Jesus said were direct quotations from the Old Testament. Throughout His ministry, He frequently referenced foundational accounts such as the creation story, the historical Adam and Eve, Noah, Elijah, Elisha, and many others. Clearly, Jesus trusted and upheld the authority of the Bible.
As believers, we are called to have the same relationship with Scripture that Jesus had.
Additionally, Scripture reading is one of the primary ways God helps us grow spiritually.
As Matthew 4:4 states, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Four Benefits of Scripture Reading
1. The Word Restores My Soul
Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul.”
To begin with, restoration means renewing vitality and bringing something back to its original condition. Importantly, God’s Word doesn’t just guide what we do—it transforms who we are.
Whenever we read the Scriptures, our souls are refreshed. Although God also restores us through community and worship, the most reliable and consistent way He does so is through His Word.
It is important to note that the Bible is not an end in itself; rather, it serves as a bridge to a deeper relationship with God. Scripture reading is not merely about gaining knowledge but about fostering intimacy with the Father through Jesus.
Therefore, we should not approach the Bible simply to learn what to do. Instead, we should read it to understand who God is and what He has done for us.
Indeed, the fire of the Christian life comes from immersing ourselves in the gospel story.
2. The Word Teaches Me Wisdom
Psalm 19:7 also says, “The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”
In this context, the “testimony” refers to the truths God has revealed about Himself. Furthermore, the word “sure” emphasizes that God’s Word is immovable, reliable, and always true.
By following the truths revealed in Scripture, we can gain the wisdom needed to make godly decisions.
Looking ahead, you may face important life decisions—such as those involving education, marriage, or parenting. In such moments, you will need the wisdom that only God’s Word can provide.
3. The Word Makes My Heart Glad
Psalm 19:8 says, “The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.”
However, it’s important to understand that reading the Bible doesn’t guarantee finding a verse that will instantly make your life perfect.
Sometimes, you may encounter passages that challenge or even offend you. If the Bible never convicts or challenges you, it may be a sign that you’re not engaging with it fully.
When Scripture exposes areas of our lives that need change, we are left with two options:
- Reject God’s conviction, which often leads to frustration and joylessness.
- Humbly accept that we are wrong, repent, and allow God to work in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
Ultimately, true joy comes from obeying God and aligning our lives with His Word.
4. The Word Personalizes My Relationship with Christ
Finally, the ultimate goal of Scripture reading is to cultivate a flourishing, daily relationship with Jesus.
It’s worth noting that Bible reading is not about completing a plan or checklist. Instead, it’s about growing closer to Christ and experiencing a vibrant, transformative connection with Him.
